Paper Mache Birthday Box

Supplies Needed:

Darice:

  • Darice 4” Paper Mache Round Box
  • ½“width Organdy Ribbon butter scotch
  • Clear Iridescent Micro Glitter

Viva Decor:

  • VIVA Decor Pearl Pen,  color Ice White #101
  • VIVA Decor Glass Effect Gel, color Crystal Clear #101
  • VIVA Decor Inka Gold, Color Platinum #904
  • Other : Water slide decal paper

Tools:

  • 1” square sponge
  • Clear Varnish
  • #12 square soft brush
     

Step 1:

Select a photo or image you like from your computer. Select the size you prefer to fit on the lid of the paper mache box.

Optional : you can print small images to use around the box for additional design, ( shown in the picture as cupcakes)

Print the selected images or photo on a Water Slide Decal Paper. (please follow the instructions from the manufacturer)

 

Step 2:

Generously spray clear acrylic sealer over the printed paper. Set aside to dry (about 2 hours)

 

Step 3:

While water slide decal is drying, apply VIVA Decor Inka Gold (Color Platinum) with a sponge on the inside and outside of the box (Including Lid). When dry, ( it takes just a minute or two) using the clean side of sponge rub gently for more brilliant shine. Wait 2 hours until you are ready for Step 4.

 

Step 4:

Cut water slide photo images. For best result, you want to cut as closely as possible to the edge of the image. Submerge the photo decal in the bowl of luck warm water. ( one image at a time) The photo paper will start to curl up. Immediately remove from the bowl and  place it on a clean work surface. Wait for about a minute or until the decal goes flat against the surface. Hold the paper with your thumb and index fingers, and slide the top layer slightly. Do not peel the paper off completely.

 

Step 5:

Place the water slide on the lid of the box by starting from one corner, pushing down the slide with one finger on the box and slowly removing the backing paper. Using your fingers smooth the slide over the lid. Use a hair dryer for a few seconds until the surface is moisture free.

 

Step 6:

Using a #12 square soft brush apply 1 coat of a clear varnish over entire box, including lid. While the varnish is still wet liberally apply clear iridescent micro glitter over entire box. Let Dry.

 

Step 7:

For jewel like texture, apply Viva Décor Glass Effect gel Crystal clear to create small sized droplets all around the box. ( see general instruction to “making pearl droplets” below.) Let dry.

 

Step 8:

Create Pearl droplets around the edge of the image with VIVA Decor pearl Pen (Color Ice White) for more elegant look. ( see general instructions to “making pearl droplets” below) let dry

 

Step 9.:

Cut cream organdy ribbon about 12” long. Tie it around the box just below the rim of the lid.

 

Helpful Hits

Making Pearl Droplets:
Hold pen in an upright position over clean surface and squeeze the tube slowly until you reach desired size. Practice until you have consistent results. Droplet may look pointy at first but will subside into dome shape.
